What happens when you start questioning your own beliefs and patterns that are holding you back? (April 5th 2026)

Have you ever heard of Hiroo Onoda?
Wikipedia tells us: Hiroo Onoda (1922–2014) was an Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who famously held out on Lubang Island in the Philippines for 29 years after World War II ended, refusing to believe the war was over until his former commander formally relieved him of duty in March 1974
The Googles' out there tell us he was found still fighting, still hiding, still protecting his position, and still committed to keeping on fighting for his country. All for a war he believed was still happening, because no one had ever told him otherwise.
For nearly 30 years, he fought alone in a war that had already ended, fighting an enemy that had long ago gone back home. Hiroo was loyal to a promise and a commitment he had made, and he wasn't going to break it. So much so, that when soldiers came to look for him, he thought it was a trap, and when leaflets were dropped from the sky informing that the war had ended, he thought it was enemy propaganda and deceit. Even his family coming to call his name didn't convince him to come out of hiding. It was only later on, when his former commander came over, that he finally believed the war was over and agreed to leave.
Why was it so difficult for him to accept the new reality? Because his brain had created a false belief that there was only one truth, and nothing could have broken it. The interesting thing is, this 'one truth only' was not unique to Hiroo.
Psychologists call this 'The Loyal Soldier' phenomenon, which causes profound detachment from reality, and before you say anything, I want you to consider where this phenomenon is showing up in your life, be it to a lesser degree...
This phenomenon describes a situation where your brain no longer synchronises with new updates (even if it is just about one part of life) - and uses past learning to dictate how we move forward.
For example, the belief that we are not good enough. Or fear of failure that came from a long-ago-forgotten disappointment, or the belief that love never sticks around, which came from someone else's story.
Neuroscience has found that these beliefs we hold create neural pathways that dictate what and how we see our world. The more we look for clues around us, the more we find more of the same, because our brain is no longer updating in an 'objective' way, just looking to confirm again and again that these old beliefs are true and unmovable.
Whenever this comes up in conversations with my clients, I help them see that beliefs are like a very oiled ploughing machine, going over and over the same lines, again and again, and again. Try to come out of these lines, and everything feels unsafe and unfamiliar. These lines are your neurological pathways, and they always get you to see, feel and behave in the same way.
The brain, though, is one clever sausage, and it allows us, with repetitions and intentions, to create new beliefs, new pathways, new results for ourselves. All we really need to do is two-fold:
1. Recognise we are in one pattern/behaviour/belief
2. Decide to be conscious and intentional about changing it
The old soldier from earlier didn't know he was in a deep state of belief that the war was still going on. If it were up to him, he would have kept it going forever.
If you're not getting the results you want, or feel you are constantly in a state of resistance, exhaustion or frustration, then this is your invitation to start exploring what belief you are operating from, and continue by exploring what it would be like if you chose a different belief instead.
Sounds impossible? Well, how's that for your starting belief??? :)

![]() | Last week, the HUUMANs took me on a long road trip so they could go check out this University, far in the Yorkshire land. The trip was really nice. I got to sit in the boot of the car, inspecting the cars all around me. When we finally got to the place we were staying at, I called dibs on the better-looking bed, and let the PEOPLE squiz in other sleeping arrangements. I didn't stay awake long enough to find out what they were doing, and ended up having a very GOOD night's sleep. I heard some complaints about my snoring, but I just blamed one of the others... I don't really care... |
I work extensively with people to help them transform their lives from fears, limitations and compromises, to harmony, alignment and joy, or in other words, helping people find natural healing to mind, body and soul.
