Let's find a new way to recognise and restore your energy before you crash (this time!)
I asked Chat GBT if it could tell me a joke about moods and energies and it gave me this one:
"My mood ring broke... now I have no idea how I feel about it!"
Funny? Chat certainly mentioned it hoped I'd get a good laugh out of it... (which may have been funnier than the actual joke...!) 😅
One thing it did get right was that too often, we don't know how we feel about things and don't recognise if they're giving us energy or taking energy away! So we just keep on going, like a lone Duracell Rabbit, only to be stopped when we crash or burn out. As you're reading this, I know you know what I'm talking about ...
So what do we do about it? How do we actually pay enough attention to what is going on inside us so that we know to tweak and change before we get to the point of no return? (slight exaggeration there, I admit!) 🤷♀️
Four things to pay attention to (I'll tell you what to do with it at the end):
1. To breathe or not to breathe
What's happening with your breath right now? Are you holding it in? What is the pattern? Short and shallow? Long and random? Are you feeling tightness around your chest? Are you noticing tension, headaches or similar?
2. Watch your mood
Are you feeling more tense? Are you losing your temper more quickly? Are you feeling fed up and wish you could just run away (or make it all stop)? Or maybe you simply no longer care and find apathy is the best way of dealing with it all?
3. Choice?
Do you feel like things are happening so fast and as if you have no possibility of stepping in and slowing things down? Or maybe it feels like other people are making decisions for you, and you feel like you haven't caught up yet? Or maybe you feel like it's too late and you can't change the trajectory of where it's all headed?
4. What's the story?
What are you telling yourself about all this? In other words - what is the narrative you are giving all this? Are you telling yourself it's all 'their' fault and 'they' made it this way? Are you noticing injustices or that 'this is how they are' and you can't do anything about it?
I'm sure all these sound familiar, mostly because we've all experienced these - all or some on more than one occasion in our lives.
So, what can you do differently to help you notice your energy in the moment and give you clues as to what you can do to protect yourself and not wait until it's too late?
I thought you'd never ask!!
Here are three things you can try:
1. Be more intentional
Or at least - Try to be more intentional about bringing your attention to your present moment, where you can notice things like the sensations in your body and your breathing patterns. Put your feet on the ground (preferably without shoes and outside) and notice the sensation of your body as it moves and breathes. Find something to focus on that is further away from you - a ray of sun, a bird, a plant standing by the printer etc). This helps to reset, so you are more regulated and more in control.
2. Curiosity
In life, there is no 'good news' or 'bad news', there is just 'news', and it's your internal narrative that attaches labels of how to interpret these events. Be more curious about things and events surrounding you, and remember that even when something seems awful right now, there will come a time when you'll look back and understand better what happened and why it needed to happen in the way it did.
3. What can I do?
At the end of the day, there are only a few things that are in your control to change and several that are not. Ask yourself - is there anything I can do about this right now? If you can, perfect - do it! And if you can't, the only thing is to not worry about it (you must have heard the saying about how worrying ruins today for something that may never happen tomorrow...). Alternatively, if you feel like you are living in someone else's shoes, you can see if finding your own pair would make it feel better. In other words - you have a choice! You can do something about it, observe how it's going, or decide it's not yours and leave. There is always a choice - just remember to bring in kindness...
Fair? (as my grandad used to ask) and now it's up to you to put it into practice! 🥰

This week, in 'Healing Conversations', I was chatting with Tessa Alburn about How To Stop Your Chronic Pain.
In today's episode, we're joined by Tessa Alburn, a mentor and soul connection guide, who shares her profound insights on emotional repression and regulation. Together, we explore why we suppress emotions due to fear, shame, and societal expectations, and the myths surrounding the expression of emotions.
Tessa offers her personal journey through chronic health challenges and the power of aligning our inner and outer selves, emphasising the importance of giving ourselves permission to feel and express our emotions.
You'll hear about the significance of understanding pain as a signal, using breathing as a tool for emotional management, and how anticipation of pain can lead to hypervigilance. Tessa and I also touch on the benefits of desensitisation techniques and the power of calming the nervous system.

This week I also had the pleasure of interviewing Katie Jones about her fascinating journey of healing from Chronic Fatigue.
In today's episode, Katie Jones shares her story of being diagnosed with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) Chronic Fatigue Syndrome at 16, following a bout of glandular fever during her teenage years. As a competitive Welsh athlete, Katie's life was dramatically altered by the illness, which left her grappling with severe symptoms, anxiety, and depression.
Katie reflects on her emotional struggles and the turning point that led her to explore holistic healing methods, such as nutritional changes, mindfulness, yoga, and spiritual practices.
Katie also opens up about the importance of addressing emotional and mental health, the breakthroughs she experienced through methods like Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and the profound effects of energy healing. We discuss the social misunderstandings about her condition and the liberation she found by sharing her journey publicly.
Katie’s resilience and curiosity guided her to write her book, "Chronically Awesome," blending personal anecdotes, practical advice, and an honest, raw voice. Her story is not just one of struggle but also of incredible growth and transformation. Join us as we explore her insights and the invaluable lessons she learned on her path to healing and wholeness. Dottie's Tip Of The Week
One thing I like to do sometimes is just to pause... Reflect... Be in the moment and not make any decisions, even when the HUUMMAANS are trying to get me to come here or there, have this snack or that... Sometimes, I like to just pause and see what unfolds... most often it's even more treats and even more cuddles, so I like to see where things are headed before I make my move! And they think it's about the funny noises they make, but I just like to see them try so hard!! |
