Cracking the Emotion Code - Why are emotions so hard to navigate?

The average person uses only 5 core emotions to describe how they're feeling at any given time. Here's a tool ...

There are a few words in the English language that I feel are too overused to get the right weight behind them to make the impact and meaning they are meant to.
Examples, according to me, are trauma, authentic self, hope, deserving, and the one I want to talk about today - EMOTIONS!!!

But I'm going to try and make it a little less boring and 'I've heard it all before' kind of an email... bear with me, please! 🐻

I know you know what emotions are, so in a nutshell, emotions are the indicators that help us figure out how we feel about something. If we're happy, we know it's been good, if we're angry, we know there's a deeper story to the trigger, if we're frustrated, we can assume we wanted things to go our way and they hadn't.

So far so good?

OK! What I want to show you today is how our limited vocabulary of the emotions out there, is only helping in keeping the veil over our eyes. If we only ever use 5-7 emotions to describe how we feel, our brain will use that to make pretty unhelpful decisions about what we really go through and what it means to our general state of alert.

I want you to think about something that totally triggered you in the past week, or that is continuously triggering you ever since <this person> said <that thing> and totally messed up a really beautiful thing!

What emotions would you say you are noticing?

I have a hunch that it will be one of these:
anger / sadness / shame / guilt / frustration - am I right?

Now I want you to look at the following image and tell me again - what emotion do you think you experienced REALLY? 👇

Now, do you see why I say our limited use of emotions is the thing that keeps us stuck?
Because if I feel 'sad', I might just try and numb it (emotional eating, anyone?), but when I figure out I am sad, but actually, lonely, but actually actually, isolated, then all of a sudden, I don't need to numb myself, but maybe find steps to reconnect or rekindle ...
Or
Maybe I'm not just anxious but actually, overwhelmed, and all of a sudden, I know exactly what to do - maybe reduce the load, maybe share about it with someone, or maybe just sit with it and trust that things will sort themselves out one way or another.

I am really really curious to hear how this little chart opens up some of your own feelings about emotions (your emotions) and how it helps shed some light on what you're going through right now.

Will you write and let me know?

The other day I recorded something about 'understanding emotions' for my Facebook Group - Heal Yourself Naturally - which you might be interested in.

What are emotions and why do so many of us prefer to bottle them up and ignore them, than feel through them and let them be?

In this video, einav avni, an Energy Healer and Alignment Coach, talks about the importance of letting our emotions out, especially when dealing with chronic pain, chronic illnesses or unexplained medical conditions, because of the mindbody connection and how our suppressed emotions come out as pain.
