Call back your spirit

Inspiration to healing

Something very interesting has been calling me more and more recently, and it is the need to address an aspect of the healing work I do; namely, that not all people heal, and the reasons behind this non-healing.
This week's podcast shares some observations I could make working with some people who don't heal, but I also want to share a story with you that highlights so nicely some of the background of no healing.
**
Some time ago I was listening to the book 'Why People Don't Heal and How They Can' - by the brilliant Caroline Myss.

In there, she is telling the story of David Chetlahe Paladin, a Navajo Indian who grew up on a reservation in the 1920s and ’30s

(please note that since listening to that story, I've read and listened to several other versions of it, so let's focus on the message of the story rather than the potential inaccuracy).

Before I tell you the story, I want you to really sit with what Caroline is saying and, after parking your ego, see what comes up for you. This is very profound to those who need this right now)

Ok. Here is the paraphrased story.

David was a Navajo Indian who grew up on the reservation in the 1920s and '30s. By age 11, he was already an alcoholic and deeply unsettled in himself.
One day, he convinced a friend to run away, and lying about their age, they joined an American Merchant Marine and toured with them.

On the ship, David befriended a German guy and spent his spare time drawing and some of his sketches later revealed to have captured some of the bunkers the Japanese were building.

The 2nd World War started and David's lie about his age came to light. The army gave David a choice - go to jail for a year or enlist in the army. Now a teenager, he decides to enlist.

Because of his Navajo language, he became an information gatherer behind enemy lines. He was to share his findings in his native language with another Navajo Indian and thus create a code the Germans weren't able to crack.

Very soon after, David is captured, and the Germans decide to send him to a death camp and be executed as a spy. In all the hustle and bustle, he is spotted and recognised by the German friend he made on the ship and is pushed last minute to a train going to a work camp instead.

David ends up in a cell, beaten and tortured. For 3 days he was nailed to the floor and fed raw-maggot-filled chicken. The floor of the cell is wet and cold. It is hell! When the Allies eventually free his camp, David is nearly dead.

Eventually, he is sent back to the States, and he goes to visit the reservation where he grew up. He meets with the elders and tells them every last detail of his ordeal. He is full of rage, anger and hate.

The elders discuss between themselves and order him to get back into a cell where the conditions are exactly the same as they were back in the camp.

'Call back your spirit, or die' they tell him.

David stood in the cell for three days, fighting his demons and fighting for himself. He understood, suddenly, that the chicken he was fed was not another form of torture, but the only way someone had to keep him alive and nourished.

At the end of the three days, David was reborn. His anger and hate left him, and he was able to call back his spirits and dedicate his life to working with priests and addicts.

This story is so powerful because it highlights two important things:
1. we all have a story we allow to define us
2. we never have the full story (mostly because it starts at a time in our lives when our brain is not fully developed yet to see the bigger picture)

How is this connected to people who don't heal?

Just like David, when we believe something is true, not much else can get in the way. If the elders had just told him to forgive and forget, that would never have worked. He needed to let go of his old self, the part of him that was too deep in the story, and reset. He needed to call back his spirits so he could remember he wasn't meant to come here to suffer but to learn, grow and serve.

But this is powerful for all healing - not just physical ones.
I'll give you an example that explains 'victimhood mindset' a little better.
(and I mention victimhood because it is another example for the injustice people may be holding on to when they don't heal)

When I first started my Coaching and NLP course, our teachers said the following sentence:
'we are born, and by age 4 our parents already f*ck us up'.
What would you do with this sentence?

Most people could go to that place of 'wow, ok, we now see what we are working with'.
I went to the place of 'I wasn't raised by my parents but by a collection of people, so how do I take this new information...'

Do you see what I mean? I automatically went to the place of why I was different and why the general teaching couldn't apply to me because I was so different...

In short, listen to your stories and notice where you are blocking your moving forward and healing by connecting with whatever keeps you stuck. Note please that most of this is very subconscious, so I am not accusing you of consciously and purposefully sabotaging your path.

We spoke before (and we will again) about how we didn't come to this world to suffer but to grow, learn and serve, which could help us understand that what happened to us (with all the pain, trauma and horrors) wasn't meant to keep us stuck in the past but to rise from it like the phoenix, and find our true path to what we came here to do.

Some people won't be ready to hear this, but if you do, you are on the track that will help you heal, grow, be and serve.

They call this tough love, but if it helps get us where we need to be, then let's embrace what comes up for us - after all, it is not a coincidence you are reading these words... 🩷

This week, I took to the stage to share some insights I gained through working with so many people, helping them heal from chronic conditions, and noticing patterns in those who won't heal.

In today's episode, we're exploring the profound challenges of forgiveness and embracing personal responsibility on the healing journey. Healing can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when we're caught up in our "anger stories" and unable to find our way out. In this episode, I'll share compassionate insights on how addressing emotional and energetic alignment can lead to truly miraculous recoveries from chronic conditions.
We'll touch on how our ego and attachment to past traumas can create barriers to healing, and why some might fear the identity shift that comes with recovery. It's about making a brave mindset shift, gently letting go of past stories, and opening up to the possibility of natural healing.

My hope is to inspire you to explore the emotional roots of your ailments and consider the incredible potential of realigning your energy—a concept backed by Dr. John E. Sarno’s work on the mind-body connection.
If you're struggling with chronic conditions or seeking comfort through natural healing methods, this episode is specially crafted for you.
